November 11th holds a special place in the hearts of Americans. It is a day of gratitude and respect. The day is dedicated to honoring those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Veterans Day began with the armistice that ended World War I. This was famously established at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. Germany and Allied nations of France, United Kingdom, Russia, United States, Italy, Belgium, Greece, Japan and Serbia agreed to cease hostilities. Since then, this day has changed its purpose. Originally, it commemorated WWI veterans. Now, it honors all veterans, both living and deceased, who served the United States in times of war and peace.
The Origin and Purpose of Veterans Day
The initial observance of this day began in 1926. Congress passed a resolution calling on the President to issue an annual proclamation. The proclamation called for the display of the U.S. flag on all government buildings and invited people across the country to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies. Schools, churches, and other institutions were encouraged to participate, fostering a spirit of friendship and peaceful relations with all nations. In 1938, Congress took further steps. They officially designated November 11 as Armistice Day. It became a legal federal holiday “dedicated to the cause of world peace.” It also honored those who had served in World War I.
After the sacrifices of World War II, it became evident that a broader recognition was needed. The Korean War further reinforced this need. In 1954, Congress officially changed “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day,” expanding its purpose to honor American veterans of all wars. That same year, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first “Veterans Day Proclamation.” He encouraged “all Veterans, all Veterans’ organizations, and the entire citizenry” to join in this day of recognition. He appointed the Administrator of Veterans Affairs as Chairman of the Veterans Day National Committee. This was to lead the national observance. Since 1989, the Veterans Administration was elevated to cabinet level. The Secretary of Veterans Affairs has served in this role since then. This ensures the day’s planning and observance remain nationally coordinated.
Veterans Day Traditions and Observances
In America, an official wreath-laying ceremony happens at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This takes place in Arlington National Cemetery every Veterans Day. This ceremony honors unknown soldiers who gave their lives in service. It serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices veterans have made. Across the nation, parades and other celebrations bring communities together to express gratitude and respect. In Great Britain, France, Canada, and Australia, November 11 is similarly commemorated as a day to honor veterans. People often observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. In Canada and the United Kingdom, red poppies are worn as a tribute. These poppies are an iconic symbol from the poem In Flanders Fields by John McCrae. Poppy sales raise funds to support veterans.
Veterans Day vs. Memorial Day
Veterans Day and Memorial Day, while related in purpose, hold distinct meanings. Memorial Day is observed on the fourth Monday of May. It honors American service members who died in military service. It also honors those who died as a result of injuries sustained in battle. Veterans Day, on the other hand, is a time to recognize all American veterans. We extend special gratitude to the living veterans who served honorably. This applies whether in wartime or peacetime.
This Veterans Day, we pause to reflect on the bravery, sacrifice, and dedication of those who have served. Let us also take a moment to appreciate the freedoms and peace they fought to preserve. Let the display of our nation’s flag remind us of their enduring commitment. May our observance inspire unity and respect in their honor. We must strive for unity despite any political disagreements we may have with each other.
