Over half way there! Is anyone endeavoring to make this project?
“Rabbits may be pretty pink creatures, but elephants can be done in nothing but grey.” this was Nancy’s dictum when asked what color felt should be used for the elephants on the wall hanging which represents Noah’s Ark and its inhabitants during the flood.
The members had already appliqued or stitched on the ark, the rabbits, the dogs, trees and the sheep. Now they were ready for the big massive creatures which hold down the lower right hand corner of the wall hanging.
The pattern as given today is pasted on light-weight cardboard or tag-board. It is dried under pressure. The two elephants are cut from felt. Dark grey is used for the top animal, and a lighter grey for the bottom. The tusk may be of same color, or it may be made of white felt. After the animal is cut, place the lighter one according to small insert panel and stitch in place with fine machine stitches.
Experiment with top elephant, laying it in such a way that the major part of under animal’s head is visible. Let a small hump of his back show, also. Take a heavy black embroidery silk and outline his ear. Work in an eye. Sew the white tusk on with the fine machine stitching.
If you are making this on a sateen backing and embroidering the animals in wool use black wool to outline feet, and to simulate ear fold. The rest of animal is worked in gray, until you reach tusk which is done in white. Use an all over long and short stitch. The animal should be completely covered with stitchery, but it should be done with care so that figure lies flat.
In appliqueing an animal of this sort, cut according to pattern allowing one-quarter inch on all sides for turned-in edges. In the applique the ear could be made of a slightly lighter shade of fast grey material.
