Noah’s Ark Wall Hanging #3 ~ Rabbit, Dog & Tree

Pattern #3 in this Nancy Page Quilt Club series.

You ought to have seen the industrious club members as they put the first two pairs of animals and the three trees in place on their wall hanging. The ark had been stitched in place at the last meeting. It stood out in Its bravery of yellow, blue and black on the sand colored felt background. The first thing the members did was to paste the pattern as given today on light-weight cardboard or tag board and to dry it under pressure. Then they cut out the three objects.

The trees were cut with vivid green tops and dark brown or black bases. There were three of these. Two stood in one group and one pine tree stood sentinel at other side of panel.

Since the animals went into, the ark two by two it is necessary to cut two rabbits and two dogs. One dog may be black felt and the other one white. The rabbits are of pale and deeper rose. The tail of the one bunny may be a bit of fur. just the tip of the second bunny’s tail shows.

After the animals are cut out lay them on the foundation hanging experimenting with the placing. Try to get them In the same relative position as shown on small insert panel, or in the one printed two weeks ago when the series started.

When you have the position you want to pin or baste the first animal in place and stitch. Then lay the second one on top. The bottom dog may be black and the top one white.

The bottom bunny may be pale rose with the deeper color on top. In placing the second animal in place move it around until it is so arranged that you get a clear profile of bottom animal’s face. The eye of top animal is on a slightly lower diagonal line from the bottom animal’s eye. Shift the patterns around until you get one which is pleasing. Do the same with the pair of trees.

Use a very fine stitch. Thread the color of the felt being appliqued is best. Using embroidery silk work a line for rabbit’s ear. Put in the eye of dog, and rabbit. Black and white may be used for eyes. If you are appliqueing the patterns in unbleached muslin or sateen allow one-quarter inch for turning over edges. If you are working them in yarn use the crewel or all covering long and short stitch.
