Noah’s Ark Wall Hanging – Pattern #2 ~ Ark

This is the second pattern in this Nancy Page Quilt Club series.

The club members brought felts, sateens, yarns, and linens, to the meeting. Today they were starting the Noah’s Ark wall hanging and were making the ark which goes at centre top.

If felts are used plan on black felt for the bottom of ark, vivid blue for the sides, yellow for roof and open door, and a bit of red at top of chimney.

Use the same colorings in yarns if you plan to make the hanging on an ecru linen or sateen foundation. Unbleached muslin can be used if the pattern is to be appliqued. Only one member chose the applique method. The others feared they could not get the fine effect of the shaggy coat of the Scottie which appears in a later issue. It can be seen in the small insert which shows the finished panel.

Lay the pattern on light-weight cardboard or tag board and paste down flat. Dry under pressure. When thoroughly dry cut the pieces.

In the finished ark the black bottom is cut in one piece, since the material is folded double. It is best to cut it straight as indicated by dotted lines where door opens back. If you cut the piece out entirely you will have difficulty in getting doors straight. It is easy to sew; lay the door on top of the bottom when sewing it on.

The roof of yellow is cut In one piece also, folding on dotted line. Have chimney at one end of ark only. There will be two doors cut as shown. The sides of the ark are vivid blue. It is wise to cut that in one piece also, folding on dotted line as Indicated. The vista left by open doors shows the foundation and color of the hanging. After the material is cut, lay it in place, baste and then stitch on machine, using a very fine stitch and stitching close to edge.

The roof edge can overlap the sides of the ark and they In turn can overlap the bottom. The doors are sewed In place last.

If yarns are used, stitch them in solidly, using an all over long and short stitch or the crewel stitch which covers the surface completely. It should lie flat, but entirely covered.

If appliqueing allow one-quarter inch on all sides for turned-in edge. Next week we cut and stitch the rabbits, the dogs and the trees.
