Noah’s Ark Pattern #8 ~ Cow

We have made it to the last pattern in this quilt series! It has been super fun to share this with you.

“Maybe you never did see a purple cow and never hoped to see one,” quoted Nancy, “but you are now ready to make a purple cow and a lavender companion. And if you want to do so you many even spot the purple one with black.”

These two animals, who complete the company which went into the ark two by two, are made just as the earlier creatures.

The sheet as given in today’s installment is pasted onto light weight card board or tag board and laid away to dry under pressure.

When thoroughly dry the animal is cut on the outline and used as a pattern. Lay it on felt and cut two cows, one lavender and one purple.

Using the small insert as a guide, pin the lavender one in place and stitch with fine machine stitching.

Now lay the purple one on top in such a fashion that the profile of head, the curve of back and the fore part of legs of under cow show plainly. Pin and baste the upper cow in place and stitch.

Using black embroidery floss, make the spots. Work the eye, and the nostril.

If you do not care for the “pied” cow you may omit the spots.

Use lavender floss for tail, bunching eight or ten strands.

If you have been working these animals in yarns on sateen back-ground you use lavender and purple yarns, covering the surface with long and short stitches as is done in solid crewel embroidery.

The tail may be worked in outline stitch.

If you have been appliqueing the animals cut them according to pattern, allowing one-quarter inch on all sides for turning under.

The wall hanging is now finished and may be hung from a cord or from the two upper corners.

Nancy was getting a whole fund of animal stories ready to tell. She knew the children would want them when they saw this jolly hanging.
