Hair Drying Towel

This was a quick fix. We just sewed on a new button. The new button secures the elastic when the towel is in use. The last button broke when it was put through the mangle. Lesson learned. ๐
Shorten a dress for a friend

I don’t believe that I got a picture of the dress. All I have is the fabric that the dress was shortened by. It seems as if it was a simple fix, and in reality it was. The thing is that real life isn’t really reality. The dress was for someone other than myself, always adds pressure to be as close to perfect as possible. Stress can be kept at a low level by careful measuring with a seam gauge and many pins. The fabric was knit. That means that I had to re-thread the serger with the correct color of thread. I haven’t used the serger often since inheriting it from my mom. That took a trip to the YouTubes to find the video from the 1980s. It pointed out that there was color-coded instructions on threading the machine inside the front panel. Thankfully, the threading was successful the first time, as was the tension choice. Most knit garments today have been finished on a cover stitch machine. Those machines are relatively expensive to buy and basically only do the one thing. I don’t have one of those machines, so had to mimic the double row of stitching on a domestic machine. Thankfully, I own a brother machine. It has a stretch stitch in its repertoire. Once around the hem to keep it in place and once more around to simulate the coverstitch machine stitching.
Black Jeans

When I purchased these jeans they had been mis-manufactured. One of the outside leg seams had caught extra fabric in the seam. Essentially, one of the legs was considerably more narrow than the other. It was not a difficult thing to take the old seam out and sew a new seam in. But, I also wanted the seam allowances to be serged to prevent fraying. The thing is, that the serger hadn’t had black thread and I was loathe to try re-threading of the machine. Lucky for me the dress that I shortened for a friend had also needed black thread! I managed to remove another item from my mending basket. I also received a “free” pair of new jeans. (OK, they weren’t free. I did pay for them when they were originally purchased. But this was so long ago that it “feels” like getting a free pair of pants).
