The horses were 2 weeks after the elephants. I was glad that they were still published on a Saturday. In looking for past series, there were times when the next installment would be published on a different day than the week before. Occasionally the series would just be published on a different day going forward without any notification that I could find.
This is the sixth of a series of eight patterns necessary for the making of the wall hanging featuring Noah’s ark.
“Because little boys and girls adore Shetland ponies, I have chosen the pony for the next animal to go into the ark,” said Nancy. “We can make the ponies in gray felt or In a tan and a brown felt. And we will make the mane and tail of cream colored silk floss.
The club set gaily to work. They pasted the pattern as given In the paper on light weight tag board or card board and then set it under a weight to dry.
Next they cut the animal along the outline and used it as a pattern for the two ponies which were soon marching into the ark.
The lower pony was cut from darker felt than the top one.
Using the small insert as a guide for the placement of the ponies the darker one was pinned into place and then stitched with fine machine stitching close to the edge. The lighter colored pony was laid on top in such a way than the profile of the head and the curved line of the back of the under pony showed clearly. When a satisfactory arrangement was made the upper pony was basted into place and then stitched.
The eye is worked in solid embroidery stitch. The nostril may be embroidered or it may be cut out, making a small round hole through which the background shows. Use a few stitches in running stitch to indicate the opening of mouth.
In putting on the mane, insert the needle from under side. Have a knot In end of thread. Pull thread through and cut the appropriate length. Continue until mane is complete. Work this after the pony is stitched in place. Bunch eight or ten strands for tail.
If the animals are worked In yarns use long and short stitch to completely cover surface. Use colored yarns for eye, nostril. Work tail and mane in outline stitch.
